KAT Takes on Community Development
Can teen fashion design propel skills and energy to create a viable retail shop that also serves the community as an intergenerational sewing center?
Seniors at Germantown High School in Philadelphia think so. Working with artist/educators from Breakfree, students in Ms. Mary Connaghan’s economics/government class combine entrepreneurship with civic improvement.
According to students Frank, Ahmaya and Sharron:
“The kids of the neighborhood are letting people in the community know that they are mature enough to run their own business and want them to think differently of them. We want to get people to change the way they spend so much on name brand things.”
Classmates Shanee and Deitrichs add:
“This project helps the youth to stay off the streets and stay out of trouble. This could be a mentoring program for the young ladies so they could have self-esteem.”
So far, students:
- Have met with City Councilwoman Donna Reed Miller and her staff member, Vernon Price;
- Learned how “Zoning Overlay” went from an idea to become city policy for their district;
- Continue familiarizing themselves with the artistic skills, product applications and entrepreneurial principles taught through Breakfree;
- Initiate early steps in networking among community stakeholders;
- Began drafting the narrative and budget for grant applications.
Here are solid curricular building blocks for what promise to develop into numerous graduation projects as well.
