Philadelphia City Council has once again been considering a “Clean Indoor Air” bill to extend its current smoking prohibitions to include restaurants, bars and other public workplaces.  Students at Woodrow Wilson Middle School have been investigating this extremely controversial issue in a larger study on tobacco and smoking prevention.  Their research prompted a busload to attend a City Council hearing this spring to describe their research and advocate for public health.

“I do not want to die from secondhand smoke.  Secondhand smoke releases toxic chemicals into the environment and the air that I breathe.  Here are some of them,” stated Anna Sutton in one of the presentations.  Her classmates then proceeded to the microphone, each naming one of the toxins from which they called on City Council to protect them. “Benzene. Ammonia. Arsenic. Butane…”
