Advocating
for Historical Markers Submitted by Lynne Kauffman and Thelma Williams, fourth grade, teachers at Gladwyne Elementary School in Lower Merion School District A schoolwide initiative based on the book, Talking Walls, influenced this project through its emphasis on how walls communicate ideas. The children viewed the mural walls throughout the city of Philadelphia and discovered their impact on the community residents. Then after investigating local history in Lower Merion Township with speakers, field trips, historical booklets and news articles, students became interested in the preservation of local historical sites. Through discussion, they realized that their historical marker goal would enhance their community just as the murals enhanced Philadelphia's communities. Artist Virgil Marti, who is designing public art for the Ardmore train station, requested their extensive knowledge about Lower Merion. He visited the two classrooms and noted from these experts the history of the people and places of significance in Lower Merion. Mr. Marti was most impressed by their understanding and attitudes. The fourth graders have narrowed their selections to the Guard House
Inn and/or the mills around Mill Creek, including the 1690 House.
