School Issues
Newport Elementary School, Perry County

Newport Elementary School 5th graders have been focusing on school issues for their KAT projects this year. These Perry County students looked into the feasibility of obtaining interesting playground equipment to substitute for some of the macadam of their schoolyard. When that solution to recess boredom appeared to be unrealistic, they set to work researching classical jump rope and circle games.

As they became knowledgeable in folk games, relays, rhymes, and Red Rover, Lori Little's KAT kids taught the games to other classes. The students are also examining lunch issues, including choices, "extras" and the advantages and disadvantages of snack/soda machines. KAT students aren't just making waves: they're learning valuable lessons about school management - that school board members serve as volunteers, for instance, and reasons why the system works the way it does.
