Violence Prevention
From Seventh Graders at Thomas Middle School in South Philadelphia

Alexis. We have been working on our project all year. Our project is based on violence prevention. First, we read several books like Number The Stars, Pocahontas, and Martin Luther King. Number The Stars is about the Germans and the Jews. Pocahontas is about how she was torn between two worlds. Martin Luther King's story is about his life and how he struggled to give all people equal opportunites.

Next, we used ibooks to research factors on youth violence. We found that early childhood abuse or neglect, easy access to weapons or witnessing violence at home causes violent behaviors in young people.

Finally, we had representitives come to our classroom. We wrote a letter to our representative, Anna Verna. Her assistant, Mr.Shapiro, came in and told us about goverment. Also, Mr.Laws from the Anti-Violence Partenership of Philadelphia visited us. He told us other reasons for anti-social behavior in middle school students.

Clearly everyone has a part keeping our area a safe place. Maybe someday our world will be peaceful.

Ashley. Violence prevention is an important thing. There is so much violence in our world today. There are many causes of violence like low self-esteem, drug/ alcohol abuse and lack of education and employment. People use violence because they had a horrible childhood. They were abused or brought up around violence. Some people don't even think about what they're doing before they do it. There's not only gun and knife violence, there is verbal abuse, too. Verbal abuse can really hurt someone. So think before you act. Talk out your problems. THINK!

Henry. I've learned what causes violence. The factors of youth violence are drug and alcohol abuse and lack of education. Parents could get arrested for the actions of their chidren. Watching violent sports like football and wrestling could lead to violence. We collected articles about youth violence.

Tiffany. I looked up on the Internet a few web sites about violence prevention. I learned so many things about conflicts and how to handle them. If there is a fight walk away or tell and adult. We learned that violence has to so with anything that brings harm to another person. These are some ways that you can handle disputes, such as conflict resolution and mediation and also anger management. For violence in schools there are therapists that are available to provide counseling services to the children who need it. I also learned that lots of people like families, teachers, all kinds of people are trying to teach children that they need to choose nonviolent ways to handle situations.

Kevin. We are talking to city workers about our project and are working to prevent violence in our school and community. We have done many assignments like collecting articles about youth violence, making books about violence, and searching the web. We are hoping our project can be a success and we can prevent violence in our school and community.

Rashanah. We are doing a project on violence prevention and how to stop violence. I learned the causes include sexual abuse, verbal abuse, and family problems. I'm really learning a lot from this project, like how to say no to drugs and how to deal with violence in and out of school.

Chanda. We are working on a project based on violence prevention. We went on a trip to the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. At the Holocaust Museum, we saw pictures and videos about what happened to Jewish people during World War II. We researched youth violence on the Internet looking up information about the topic. We also had visitors come to speak to us about violence prevention. We also collected newspaper articles about youth violence. I've learned about peer preasure, stress, and bullying.

Caiseen. We, 731, worked on this project and had to find as much information on violence prevention and aspects of it and put it together. We went onto the Internet every day of the week. We had numerous visitors who came to our class and talked about violence prevention. We had classes about conflict resolution.

Victor. I did a lot of research about violence prevention. We had several people come in and talk to us. I learned that violence is everywhere and starts for stupid reasons.

Shante. In the service learning project I learned a few things. The first thing I learned was about the Holocaust. Our class went to the musuem and saw a movie about another Jewish girl and her life. The next thing we saw was a movie about Martin Luther King . Clearly, we found many interesting facts for our service learning project.

Nicholas. I've learn a lot about violence prevention over the past few weeks. First, Mr.Shapiro taught me alot of stuff about the government and his job. Mr.Shapiro is the assistent from Anna Verna's office. Dr. Spampinato came in to our school and told us that she was in Colorado during the

Terrell. We learned about how to prevent violence from our project. We need to talk, not fight. I also learned about the Holocaust, Martin Luther King, and Pocahantas. Ethnic and racial hatred cause violence as well. We had many assignments like making children books and getting articles about violence. Definitely, knowledge is power. Through this knowledge, we can prevent violence in school and our community.

Susan. Youth violence in school is the issue that our project is about. To prevent youth violence is our goal. To accomplish this goal, we did reseach on the Internet, and had vistors come to our class to help us with our project .They taught us alot. We also collected newspaper articles. From these activities, we will promote peaceful behavior in our school by putting up posters encouraging good behaviors. Clearly, we all must work to keep our school safe.

Nicholas. I've learned a lot about violence prevention over the past few weeks. First,Mr.Shapiro taught me alot of stuff about the government and his job. Dr.Spampinato came in to our school and told us that she was in Colorado during the Columbine incident. Mr.Laws talked about youth violence. We talked about violence on TV and on video games. This is what I learned about youth violence prevention.

Cristina. My class is doing a service learning project on violence prevention. At school, I got on the computer and went on the Internet. I went to some Websites about violence. I got some information on how we can help preventing in schools. My class had different people talk to us. From everything I learned, I will write a children's book on conflict resolution and read it to an elementary school class.

Antanae. I really learned a lot about safety and respect and how to stop violence in some way. We must respect other people if you want them to respect you back. One thing I will do is to write a childeren's book about preventing violence. Definitely, we all must do our parts in preventing conflicts in school.

Leronda. Our project is about violence prevention . We looked up articles about young teens getting involved with violence. We have collected them and made a book. We also had guest speakers to come and visit us. We have had women come from South Carolina and visit us to see what are project was about.

Nicholas. I learned that children with low self-esteen have lots of stress and can't handle the downs that life might bring. They also pick on younger kids, hoping to relieve the pressure. Second, we learned what happens when a student lacks education. If someone lacks education, they won't have a good job when they grow up. Violence can be a threat to your future if you get involved with it. Finally, we learned about gun violence. Many children get involved in gun violence. School violence is a big problem in our society. In conclusion, violence is a problem which needs to be resolved.

Carolyn. We are doing a project on violence prevention. While in school, we used our i-book to research youth violence for our service learning project. I found a lot of useful stuff like warning signs on how to know if a child needs help.

Vicki . Our issue is to make our school safe. My classmates are working on a project together called the service learning project on violence prevention. My classmates work on a mini-laptop called an ibook. We surfed the Internet to get some information on violence prevention and other things.
