Analyze the Research

After students have collected information from a variety of sources, they need to be able to analyze it.   The key here is to teach them how to look at the information, not only for what is there, and HOW that information is presented, but also for what is NOT there. Analysis involves going beyond manipulating numbers.  Among its many lessons, Section V in the KAT Manual delves into analyzing sources of information, points of view, emotional appeals, and the importance of asking useful questions, among other lessons.

How Two KAT Classes Used This Component

Skateboarding
Gladwyne students not only reviewed the surveys, they learned and applied some fairly sophisticated techniques to graph and present their statistics. They learned about making inferences from their data, and what sorts of inferences could, and could not be, considered legitimate. Time permitted them to focus primarily on the use of safety equipment and the potential demand for a skatepark.

School Safety
Woolslair students also learned and applied new math skills in analyzing their findings. Charts, graphs and maps took on real meaning, and were not just theoretical examples on a worksheet. Their analysis also considered the age and grounds of the school and the nature of the community in which it is situated.
