  Component 6:
Assessment and Reflection

Assessment and reflection are a key part to the learning process and should not be overlooked.   The teacher should share observations about the process. Students should take the time to evaluate their own involvement and change through the process and how they would apply their acquired knowledge to new situation. Section VIII of the KAT Manual takes an in-depth look at multiple assessment formats and rubrics.

How Two KAT Classes Used This Component

Skateboarding
This project created a paper trail - logs, letters, data - that the students and teacher could refer back to and assess. Every student participated in one of the many public presentations, and each had to
handle authentic questions posed on the spot by elected or appointed officials. Videotape recorded some of these interactions for further
reflection. No skatepark has yet been constructed; students can follow up as a group or as individuals.

School Safety
Students organized their work and participated in KAT's Kid Fair, a public conference at which students could share their experiences and debrief about civic life with the press and the public. They continue their relationship with their Councilman, and visited him at city hall. Students can follow up their safety study by re-examining jaywalking and traffic incidents. They completed a post-test scenario and citizenship survey in order to assess their growth in understanding with findings from similar instruments given before their project.
